Course Description
This course will provide participants with an overview of complex trauma and child traumatic stress and how to respond from a law enforcement perspective. Participants will learn how trauma affects adults and children including the impact on child development.
Topics and Learning Objectives
- Identify the types of experiences and situations that can be traumatic for children
- Describe the three different types of trauma experiences
- Identify the three types of stress that result from traumatic experiences
- Explain the impact of trauma on children who have experienced maltreatment
- Explain the relationship between a child’s lifetime trauma history and his or her behaviors and responses
- Explain how traumatic experiences affect brain development
- Explain how traumatic experience affect child development
- Define psychological safety and its importance to children’s well-being
- Identify strengths and protective factors that promote resilience among children who have been impacted by trauma
- Identify potential strategies to support children and families who have been impacted by trauma

Workshop Description:
Ever wondered why some children/youth/caregiver’s behavior seem so bizarre? Information will be shared on the impact of complex trauma on children and caregiver’s behavior, development, changes in brain chemistry and the long-term effects on neural connections and physiological responses in children and caregivers who have experienced trauma. Participants will be energized with new ideas and actionable steps to effectively engage the family.

Workshop Description:
This workshop is designed to educate on the impact of secondary traumatic stress. Participants will learn how to assess symptoms of secondary traumatic stress (STS) in themselves and others and explore factors that help to protect professionals from the negative effects of STS.
Topics and Learning Objectives:
- Explain the potential negative impact of STS on their personal and professional lives, their organization, and the families they serve
- Describe the key characteristics of STS
- Identify risk factors and symptoms of STS
- Describe STS protective factors
Instructional Hours: 1.5
Description:
This workshop lays a foundation for exploring biases and stereotypes and the importance of moving beyond them when working with clients and colleagues. Through dialogue and activity, participants will analyze their own perceptions and how they can work better with others.

- Recognize the importance of being open to sharing with others and embracing change
- Analyze your personal biases and how it affects your perception of others
- Recognize diversity and correlate your understanding to the larger society
